How to Calculate Arudha Pada:

Arudha Pada is known as the Ascendant’s mirror and is useful for some divisional chart analysis.

To calculate, look at Lagna / Ascendant (1st House), and figure out the Lord of this house.

Leo derives its power from its Lord, Sun.

Cancer derives its power from its Lord, Moon.

Gemini and Virgo derive their power from their Lord, Mercury.

Taurus and Libra derive their power from their Lord, Venus.

Aries and Scorpio derive their power from their Lord, Mars.

Sagittarius and Pisces derive their power from their Lord, Jupiter.

Capricorn and Aquarius derive their power from their Lord, Saturn.

Then look at where the Lord is sitting in the chart.

Example:

Ascendant Aries 21°01’10 in 1st House.

Mars Pisces 25°35’23’ in 11th House.

Lord of Aries is Mars, Mars is in the 11 places away from the 1st House.

To calculate the Arudha Pada, you count the number of places the planet is from the ascendant, and then count from the planet that same amount of places forward (including its own sign).

Example:

Lord of Aries is Mars, Mars is in the 11 places away from the 1st House.

Count from the 11th House around 11 times (including itself), making the Arudha Pada (Ascendant’s Mirror) in the 9th House.
