How to do a Saptamsa Divisional Chart (D7)

What is a Saptamsa Chart?

The Saptamsa chart is created by dividing each sign of 30 degrees into 7 sections of 4°17′ degrees. You place your D1 planets in their Saptamsa positions to see your Saptamsa Chart. Each ‘section’ / Saptamsa has a distinct meaning. To calculate you look at each planet and look at it’s star sign, and it’s degrees on your D1 chart. Then look at the following list and work out what it’s new position is.

This chart can be called the “fruits of your marriage”. Saptamsa is primarily used to see your children / progeny, and grandchildren. Though it can show anything created together with a partner, such as a business, home, etc. It can also be used in a women’s chart to see the quality of one’s spouse.

Odd and Even

First separate the Odd signs from the Even signs.

Odd

1 / Aries

3 / Gemini

5 / Leo

7 / Libra

9 / Sagittarius

11 / Aquarius

Even

2 / Taurus

4 / Cancer

6 / Virgo

8 / Scorpio

10 / Capricorn

12 / Pisces

After flipping the Even sign to it’s opposite sign, it operates the same as the Odd signs.

Calculating

Odd signs don’t move. If a planet is placed in 10° Leo, then you calculate from 10° Leo.

Even signs do move. If a planet is placed in 10° Virgo, then you calculate from 10° Pisces.

Even signs are flipped to their opposite sign.

2 / Taurus = 8 / Scorpio

4 / Cancer = 10 / Capricorn

6 / Virgo = 12 / Pisces

8 / Scorpio = 2 / Taurus

10 / Capricorn = 4 / Cancer

12 / Pisces = 6 / Virgo

After flipping the Even sign to it’s opposite sign, it operates the same as the Odd signs.

Saptamsa

First look at a planet in your D1, and look at it’s degrees to work out it’s Saptamsa.

Saptamsa 1: 0° – 4°17’8″

Saptamsa 2: 4°17’8″ – 8°34’17”

Saptamsa 3: 8°34’17” – 12°51’25”

Saptamsa 4: 12°51’25” – 17°8’34”

Saptamsa 5: 17°8’34”- 21°25’42”

Saptamsa 6: 21°25’42” – 25°42’51”

Saptamsa 7: 25°42’51” – 30°

Example

Ascendant Aries 21°01’10 = Saptamsa 5

Sun Sagittarius 15°00’50 = Saptamsa 4

Moon Virgo 4°12’10 = Saptamsa 1

Mercury Capricorn 00°57’00 = Saptamsa 1

Venus Scorpio 21°50’39 = Saptamsa 6

Mars Pisces 25°35’23’ = Saptamsa 6

Jupiter Taurus 03°08’38 = Saptamsa 1

Saturn Sagittarius 11°40’33 = Saptamsa 3

Rahu Aquarius 12°54’19 = Saptamsa 4

Ketu Leo 12°54’19 = Saptamsa 4

Calculations

To make a calculation you count the “saptamsa number” from the odd / even sign placement to land onto a new sign to get it’s D7 position.

Example of Odd

Lagna in Aries Saptamsa 5 (21°01’10) in D1.

You start at Aries, and count around 5 places (including Aries). So D7 Position of Ascendant will be Leo.

Example of Even

Venus in Scorpio Saptamsa 6 (21°50’39) in D1.

You start at Scorpio, and then flip it to the opposite sign Taurus, then count around 6 places (including Scorpio). So D7 Position of Venus will be Libra.

Moon in Virgo Saptamsa 1 (4°12’10) in D1.

You start at Virgo, and then flip it to the opposite sign Pisces, then count around 1 places (including Pisces). So D7 Position of Moon will be Pisces.
