How to do a Navamsa Divisional Chart (D9)

How to do a Navamsa Divisional Chart (D9):

The chart is done by dividing each sign of 30 degrees into 9 sections of 3°20′ degrees.

You then place the planets in their Navamsa positions to see your Navamsa Chart.

This is the most important chart besides your birth chart, your ultimate path or marriage chart, is seen as the mirror to the birth (rasi) chart. It represents inner karma or destiny, your second half of life, who you are in marriage life, etc.

Many people discuss that when they get married they change as a person. It is not that they have changed, their D1 (birth chart) remains the same, but their activated energy inside their marital situation can be entirely different to their normal self. This is seen through the Navamsa.

You can use this chart to best determine the bride and groom’s perspective. To see how your marriage will be together you can compare your “navamsa” charts.

The following numbers were originally taken from the book Vedic astrology : a guide to the fundamentals of jyotish but the math can be worked out yourself through watching the first video at the top of this page.

Signs

Look at each planet and look at it’s star sign, and it’s degrees on your D1 chart. Then look at the following list and work out what it’s new position is.

Example: Moon Virgo 4°12’10 (D1) = 3°20′-6°40′ Aquarius (D9). If you were to scroll down to Virgo, and look at 4° you would see this falls into 3°20′-6°40′ of Aquarius in the D9 math. So within the D9, the mind would now be located in Aquarius. Meaning that after marriage your mind may be more concerned with your incoming gains rather than an attention to detail.

Houses

Take your newly calculated Ascendant (Lagna) from the above section, and place a 1 in it’s sign on a chart like this:

Navamsa D9 Blank Default Chart

Free blank chart

Feel free to save the default image and edit it yourself. This style of chart is called a South Indian Chart, and is one of the type of charts used for Astrology calculations.

Example: Ascendant Aries Bharani 21°01’10 = 20°00′-23°20′ Libra Vishakha, a 1 would be placed in Libra’s square on the chart.

Then go around and place numbers on the rest of the Navamsa chart.

Continuing with the prior example, then it would be Scorpio would be 2nd House, Sagittarius 3rd House, etc.

Now place all your planets in the correct star sign (rashi) locations.

To make the below image either you can cut and paste the images from the middle, get new images for the planets, or just write the words in each house.

Explanation

The following video discusses what all the houses represent in Navamsa in the first 15 minutes:

Remember to look for the lord of these Navamsa houses and how well they are positioned in terms of the signs.

1st house: overall health, who we are, ego, strength of marriage, ability for marriage to sustain itself over time, the overall quality of marriage.

2nd house: sustainance, wealth, accumulation of wealth throughout the marriage, own family (new immediate family).

3rd house: courage needed for the marriage to sustain, how much effort you need to put in to deal with your marriage.

4th house: comfort and happiness of the marriage, how much happiness you have stored in the karma for marriage. look at lordship, malefic and benefic dont matter.

5th house: romance of the marriage, creative aspect of marriage, enjoyment in marriage, how much fun you have (sports, playing games, travel, etc).

6th House: debts accumulated through the marriage, having a lot or not a lot of arguments (everyone has one, but how quickly they are resolved or how much difficulty they cause).

7th House: your spouse (who they are, personality, character), your ability to compromise in the marriage (is it all about you, what I say goes, etc).

8th House: Longjevity of marriage, joint assets accumulated through spouse, look at malefic verses benefic impact (malefic lord good in malefic position, benefic lord good in benefic position, etc).

9th House: Does marriage lead you to your spiritual ashram, how your spouse influences your religious beliefs.

10th House: Image of the marriage, reputation as a married couple.

11th House: Desires, hopes, wishes of the spouse. How many desires can be met, how much can be gained, through the desires of your spouse. Does your spouse give your desires a boost.

12th House: Bed pleasures, foreign lands, donations, spiritual life, foreign travel.

This is a series on the meanings of the Navamsa House positions and their affect on your marriage:

“So a planet can be strong or weak depending on how much it likes its position based on its likes and dislikes…” So the traditional locations of planets apply, the exaltation and debilitation of planets, and their mooltrikon and own sign positions, and friendly signs.

For example, with the Sun in Sagittarius in the birth chart, its in a friendly position, yet within the Navamsa it is in its mooltrikon position within Leo (so stronger). Meaning the Sun’s boosted by extra strength.

“It can raise its strength if it’s strong in the navamsa chart… because the Navamsa is like your “ultimate path”, it’s the added guide behind your rasi, the “boost” if you will.”

So these are the placements that will boost your main self. It’s say… the undercurrent beneath your stream driving you along…
